Friends of the Betsie Valley Trail Trail Care Coordinator 

The Trail Care Coordinator is responsible for the overall maintenance and repair of the trail, overseeing contractors and volunteers to keep the trail and trail care equipment in good condition. The Trail Care Coordinator is a volunteer position, a member of the board of the FBVT, and serves as a liaison with the Betsie Valley Trail Management Council. This work generally occurs May – October, hours are variable, approximately 30 – 40 hours per month. 

1. Administration Duties include:

  1. Maintaining the FBVT Gmail account
  2. Attending monthly Management Council Meetings
  3. Participating on the FBVT Board
  4. Developing an annual maintenance and repair plan and budget including a plan for spending yearly DNR funds
  5. Keeping the Michigan DNR informed regarding trail maintenance Submitting expenses to the FBVT and Management Council
  6. Recruiting and managing volunteer Section/Job Stewards responsible for Trail Maintenance and Tree Removal

2. Volunteer Activities

  1. Work with Volunteer Coordinator to maintain list of active volunteers signed up to engage in trail work and conduct spring volunteer training day
  2. Coordinate and Oversee
    i. Volunteer Work Days – Spring clean-up, Summer tune-ups, special events
    ii. Blower Crews -Every other week and fall clean-up
    iii. Section Stewards – Trail maintenance, tree removal, cleaning up trash, trimming
  3. Take pictures of works days and the trail for marketing

3. Trail Maintenance

  1. Determine whether repairs can be done by Trail Maintenance Steward or whether outside contractors are needed
  2. If an outside contractor is needed, solicit bids and submit proposal and budget to the FBVT and Management Council as appropriate
  3. Oversee work of Trail Maintenance Steward(s) and contractors engaged to:
    i. Repair trail surface
    ii. Clear away brush along trail edges and bridges
    iii. Blow trail clean of leaves, grass clippings, debris
    iv. Repair turtle holes
    v. Install benches and signs
    vi. Shore up erosion with 4x4s, repair overlook & bridge boards

4. Tree Removal

  1. Identify and maintain contact list of qualified chainsaw operators
  2. Ensure reports of downed trees are forwarded to appropriate person
  3. Oversee and coordinate work of Tree Removal Steward(s)
  4. Removal of fallen trees and dangerous branches as reported
  5. Removal of fallen trees and debris in the spring
  6. Chainsaw certification training sessions
  7. Upkeep of Trail chainsaw – Chain sharpened, oiled

5. Asset Management

  1. Maintain Gator, Blower and other equipment and tools – tire pressure, oil, gas, registration
  2. Identify and budget for equipment/tool needs
  3. Maintain the storage facility

6. Safety and Signage Needs

  1. Evaluate placement/replacement of Stop and other signs
  2. Maintain blinking stop lights
  3. Maintain an inventory of posted signs

7. Qualifications

  1. Good organizational, communication and management skills
  2. Effective at working with and motivating people and teams
  3. Ability to make effective presentations to local governmental entities and oversight organizations
  4. Experience with construction/landscaping helpful but not required
